Allan Goes and The Carlson Gracie Legacy While Allan Goes went on to become an MMA pioneer and a founding member of the legendary Brazilian Top Team, none of his remarkable accomplishments would have been possible without Carlson Gracie. In addition to being a jiu-jitsu and MMA innovator, Carlson, more than anyone, was responsible for the worldwide spread of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. While the rest of the Gracie family kept their Jiu-Jitsu “secrets” within the family, Carlson went out of his way to teach the gentle art to Brazilians, Americans, and the rest of the world. Carlson also broke down many class and economic divides that plagued Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. While other Jiu-Jitsu schools catered to the rich, Carlson welcomed all students – so long as they shared his love for Jiu-Jitsu. Nowhere was this more evident than in Carlson’s tutelage and “adoption” of Goes, a poor boy from the favelas of Rio. Growing up with Carlson, Goes learned that Jiu-Jitsu is not simply a martial art, but a way of life and a Jiu-Jitsu school is not simply a business, but a family. |
